Malcolm Hurlston chairs the Foundation for Credit Counselling, the leading charity for the overindebted which he founded in 1992, Registry Trust, which runs the Registry of County Court Judgments for the Lord Chancellor's Department; and the Employee Share Ownership Centre, created in 1987 to bring leveraged employee share ownership to Europe.

In addition he is a founder shareholder of the trades union financial institution, Unity Trust Bank and served as chairman of the government-owned Student Loans Company in 1992/1993. From January 1 2003 he has chaired the national Proof of Age Standards Scheme, which he created for the British Retail Consortium.

Hurlstons Corporate Consultancy, specialises in research, lobbying and social investment. It is a 50 percent shareholder in employee-owned Poptel Technology.
